The Gibson iterview - Mick Taylor=> August 20 – Recommended Read: The gibson interview – Mick Taylor

There are two parts as of today: part 1 | part 2

Gibson.com recently caught up with Taylor by phone from his London office, in between European shows. Ever the performer, the guitarist seems keen to get back on the road after having to cancel dates earlier in the year because of an illness.

=> August 18 – semi-confirmed gig in sweden for summer 2011!

As swedish newspaper ‘Expressen‘ writes, Anders Albertsson, who is Arena-Manager of the Ullevi stadion in Goteburg, Sweden, has begun to negotiate with Life Nation for the possibility of a gig of the Stones in next summer. (thx to Addicted and FolkyFireKitten1 for the tips!)

=> Upate #1: As we hear from Vilhelm from the Stonesvikings (swedish stones Fans), what Anders Albertsson, the manager of Ullevi stadium says is, that should the Rolling Stones be touring, it´s very possible that they would be playing the Ullevi stadium. He has the impression that this doesn’t tell anything about the year this could happen. … Hmmmm …

But we also hear, that band members (i.e Chuck, Bernard, Lisa, Tim etc…) have now been informed that there will be a tour!

According to Vilhelms translation, in that article it is mentioned, that

"next year it seems that these giants are on their way to Sweden and Göteborg. A foreign person working with the Stones has explained, as we (the newspaper) understand, that the Stones are going out on tour and will make a stop in Göteborg next summer. That info is also confirmed by a swedish source with good insight concerning the swedish arrangements.
Anders Albertsson won´t confirm this and says: ‘I know nothing about this. But we have started negotiations and discussions with Live Nation about future Ullevi bookings.’"

Well, that’s allwe have by now, to be honest. Although this might not be very much, it generally points to the fact that "things are going on" and I BET, that this will lead to some really good news about a new tour and a (possibly) new album!

Negotiations between the management and possible venues at this time seem quite possible to me at this point. Although this is the first possible venue of a possible next Stones tour of which I heard so far, it is a little strange that this is an european venue. That would point to a tour starting in Europe before moving over to the US. Even if that would not be the usual way they tour, it still is a possibility. Lessons learned from tours before where tax issues forced them to cancel gigs in the UK. However things may develop, I’ll keep you posted as soon as I can!

=> August 12 -Faces 1st reunion gig in london

Faces reuinion 2010Kicking off their reunion tour at a concert held by American Express at the British Music Experience at London’s O2 Arena, Hucknall ran through the hits to rapturous applause and shouts of "best band in the world" from the crowd. They played to an audience of just 400 people, so it was an intimate gig.

Ronnie was joined by two fellow original Faces members – drummer Kenney Jones and keyboard player Ian McLagan. Former Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock completes the line-up for the reunion tour, and last night Wood’s son Jesse joined them on stage to play guitar. Speaking before their performance, the rocker said it was "magic" having Hucknall sing with the band. He said: "We do miss Rod but having Mick here is just unbelievable because it’s one of those situations that you probably at first think wouldn’t work but it’s magic." Ronnie congratulated Rod Stewart on the news he and his wife Penny Lancaster were expecting another child together.

=> August 7 – It’s Stones or beatles at 2012 olympics in London?

Aparently, both The Beatles’ legend Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones are considered possible candidates to headline the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics. The Daily Star reports:

"The 2012 Olympics opening ceremony is going to be spectacular. It has to be to kick off the event in great British style. Everyone wants to be a part of this historical happening and what is great for us is The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney are interested in playing," a source said.
"We’re looking at the American Super Bowl’s half-time show – which they have played at – as the kind of thing we’re going for with the opening ceremony. It would be great to have both but there can only be one headliner. It’s going to be difficult but talks have opened and we’ll see what can be worked out," the source said.

Be that as it may – the Stones have not yet said anything official about this. But this is just another hint in the same direction of what we have to expect. And I bet, there will be more and more news surfacing soon!

I feel like playing - Ronnie Wood=> August 3 – Ronnie’s new album due this fall

This is his seventh studio record and entitled "’I FEEL LIKE PLAYING" and is due out 27th September 2010 [Cat. No. EAGCD428].

There’s a bunch of friends and guests on the album, such as Slash, Flea, Billy Gibbons, Kris Kristofferson, Bobby Womack, Ian McLagan and more. At blogcritics.org, Phyllis Pollack writes a question he asked Bernard Fowler, the producer of Ronnie’s album:

"I asked Fowler about the upcoming release, and he told me, "This is the second album I produced for him, and the hardest because of what he was going through, and it can plainly be heard." He adds, "With the help of Bob Rock and friends, it is a well rounded record, if I must say so myself."

Here’s the tracklist:

  1. Why’d You Wanna Do A Thing
  2. Sweetness
  3. Lucky Man
  4. I Gotta Go
  5. Thing About You

=> New at amzon and elswhere: RARE AND UNSDEEN – The Rolling Stones. As I haven’t seen it yet, here’s what Terrence Butcher at popmatters.com has to say about this DVD, among other things:

"[…] MVD Visual is betting that the band’s legions – no, generations of devotees – still hunger for more behind-the-scenes tidbits, as they’ve released this The Rolling Stones: Rare and Unseen on DVD. It isn’t a concert film, nor should it be, as the Stones have at least eight(!) of such under their belts, surely a record no other artist can match.

[…] This non-performance documentary – and the group has notched a few of those as well – contains over an hour of assorted clips, most allegedly not widely seen before. The footage isn’t limited to a particular era, but instead spans decades, from their early years of seducing Britain’s teen populace while scandalizing the starchy establishment to the middle-aged mega-stardom of the ‘80s onward. Refreshingly, there’s no chronological linearity in the film, so it’s impossible to predict what will come next, although that may be maddening to some viewers.

[…] Though occasionally engrossing, The Rolling Stones: Rare and Unseen is a must only for dyed-in-the-wool fans, and even they may wish there was more music in the doc; one wonders if that was a tangled rights issue there. It’s also unhelpful that no dates are ever mentioned for the clips we see, so the viewer is left to speculate. The film presents a lifetime of interviews, and I chuckle slightly while noting how various members, including Jagger, have aged, looking rather craggy and gaunt-faced as they slide into – dare I say – their elderly years. […]"

=> July 28 – The mighty tour-machine starts rolling!

As Bloomberg Businessweek reports, we have reasonable support for the best of our hopes! As far as the report tells, the Stones

" … are in talks with promoters AEG Live and Live Nation Entertainment Inc. for a tour, according to a person who declined to be identified because talks are private.
[…] The Stones are planning concerts in the next few years and haven’t yet signed a contract, said the person. An auction for the tour has been under way for about a month and a group of independent promoters is also bidding, the person said."

Even if this will not be called a farewell tour, it could be promoted as such and the demand will be enormous, because .. this is the Stones, man! They grossed $558.3 million with their last tour, so everyone wants to join in of cause.

=> Ronnie displays his art: "He’s Like a Rainbow: Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones to Have Art Show in Ohio" (nytimes.com)

Ronnie will display his art at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio – an eight-week exhibition that the museum says is the first American show of Mr. Wood’s art. The show lastss from Sep. 21, 2010 through Nov. 21, 2010. It will feature about 60 works. Ronnie is expected to be in attendance for the show’s opening at a gathering of museum patrons, and that, in this instance, no extraordinary requests appeared in his tour rider.

If you go there, you’ll find pics from Patty and Keith at the Spring awards, many pics of Theodora with the Hung-On-U bag and infos about charity. These bags are fairly priced and some part goes to charity . Lately, the August-issue of Vogue has a feature on Patty and lots of infos about the bags, but more important, the story of her cancer fight and how her family fit in there.

Hung on U now introduces a unique and versatile bag that conforms to your body, ties in various knots, and folds for easy travel, making a stylish, functional, and flattering alternative to the utilitarian fanny pack. Because every woman has a unique sense of style, the collection crafted for you includes varieties in nylon, denim, glitter, suede, and pony that will appeal to all aesthetics and lifestyles.

Hung on U strives to give back. Patti faced her challenge with cancer and came away with a passionate desire to help others who also face this challenge. She insisted that the Hung On U company support through donations an organization dedicated to cancer research. Her co-owners of Hung On U share Patti’s commitment and have adopted as a Hung On U company policy that donations will be made to a cancer charity for children to carry on the fight against cancer.

=> July 28 – Ronnie to tour with the Faces – August 11th, 13th and in January 2011

Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall is gonna take Rod Stewart’s role. Watch Ronnie and Kenny Jones answering questions to the BBC:

=> July 27 – We already saw this coming more than a year ago or something; now this thing seems to dawn upon us!

Farewell? Well, not yet, it seems. According to Entertainment Weekly (or the NY Post), a Stones representative has denied the farewell part of the disussion. That leaves the new tour, new album part of the issue. And that was NOT denied. By now, things are slowly moving to their place, it seems. Considering the scale of one more Stones world tour, it is safe to say that behind the curtains, the planning has already begun. According to a fan in Richmond, Charlie stopped by Mick two days ago (July 24th) and there was some gathering going on. Maybe because Mick’s approaching birthday, but it’s easy to assume that some tourplans were made as well.

=> July 26 – Meanwhile, we hear from Ronnie, that this tour is not meant to be a farewell. Which is alright for me, ’cause the Stones never have agreed to any ‘Last Stones Tour’ since 1965!

Ronie said: “We’ll rock till we drop.” He confirmed that he, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts ARE planning a tour – but it will NOT mean the end: “We have all agreed this won’t be the last time. Everyone’s rocking.” (see people.co.uk fot this)

=> July 25 – The Stones are set to finally bow out after 50 years in music – with a giant farewell tour! As The Sun reports, they are in talks with promoters Live Nation about the tour, and a source said:

"They’re likely to perform in stadiums. It’s almost certainly the last full-scale world tour. The band realise that age is creeping up on them. They want to bow out on top of their game, and not short-change their fans."

Next things we all will like to know: will they put out a new album with the tour? Of cause they should!! There will be an official announcement soon, I guess and of cause I will get all the important news ready for you here to the best of my abilities. So stay tuned!

PKeith Richards + wife Patty Hansen, who won battle against canceratty has battled cancer…

Patti Hansen reveals in the August issue of Vogue magazine that she was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2007.

She says she first underwent chemotherapy, which shrunk the tumor but didn’t get rid of it completely. One doctor said she had two to three years to live.

Her next move was a bold one: Doctors removed her bladder and used her intestine to create a neobladder, or a new bladder. She also had her appendix removed and a full hysterectomy.

Keith’s Bio!

=> As we all wait for Keith’s bio to be released, the PR seems to gather speed.

Now we can read reports, that "Keith Richards planning new tell-all book" or "Keith Richards exposes Mick Jagger in autobiography" or that "Mick Jagger upset with Keith Richards’ revelations" or things like:

The autobiography is being seen as a big gamble by the guitarist because its revelations could permanently fracture the band. […] An early draft has already been written, with band’s management advising him to tone certain sections down in order to avoid a confrontation with his bandmate.

Well, this of cause does the trick, I think. A more balanced view could be found in "The Odd Couple", I guess. Nevertheless – this book seems to be a must have for most of us, right!?

Keith Richards’ tribute to his decades-long friendship with legendary ska and reggae singer Justin Hinds has a new chapter. Produced by Brian Jobson, Wingless Angels II (Mindless Records; reorders: August 1, release: September 23, 2010), is a collection of new recordings featuring Hinds’ last sessions before his passing, and a special re-release of the much-sought-after original album, long out of print. ==> Jagger’s Jukebox!

Runs 120 min. and there are 6 days left to listen to it at the BBC:

Mick hand-picks a selection of artists and music that influenced the band’s ground-breaking sound, in particular their classic album Exile On Main St. In conversation with Paul Sexton, Mick talks through a wide-ranging playlist that reflects his own, and the band’s, love of classic R&B, gospel, country and reggae.

The fascinating mix of material conjures up the musical environment of the late 60s and turn of the 70s, in which the Stones, and so many of their peers, were scaling new and ever more eclectic creative heights. In a show that includes both vintage hits and lesser-known gems, we’ll find out which of the band’s fellow rock acts from that era have Jagger’s personal seal of approval. We’ll also hear some brilliant soul records that have remained his all-time favourites; plus singer-songwriters; giants of country and Americana; and much more besides.

==> Drug free and sober for 60 days

Go go go, Ronnie, go!

While Exile roars, Ronnie has stayed clean and sober for about two months now. Ana Araujo is still with him and he has plans to go on the road with the reunited FACES – with Mick Hucknall, 49, from Simply Red, as the singer instead of Rod Stewart, while former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock, 53, has replaced Ronnie Lane – who died in 1997 – on bass.

So the band consists of Wood and two other original members, drummer Kenney Jones, 61, and keyboardist Ian ‘Mac’ McLagan, 65.

‘It will be the first time the Faces have ever been focused,’ Ronnie said. ‘Normally, we would all have gone on stage with a bottle.’

==> Mick on Touring (blogs.wsj.com):

To mark the release of the new, expanded “Exile on Main Street,” the Rolling Stones briefly considered a tour during which they’d play the entire album. […]

Though Jagger found the idea intriguing, he wasn’t sure a vast audience would. “Some people might think it’s great,” he said. “Others would be bored to death.” Almost immediately, Jagger saw problems. “How do you book it? We’re playing one album only? In order?” […]

“You’d have to play some other material,” Jagger allowed. Which Morrison and Wilson both did in their shows. […] Jagger wondered what Stones fans would expect next. “Are you going to play ‘Sticky Fingers’ and “Let it Bleed’?” he asked rhetorically.

In the end, Jagger and the band decided against an “Exile” tour. “The thing is,” he said, “we’ve done quite a lot of those numbers live.”

Which suggests, when the Stones next tour, “Exile on Main Street” once again will be well represented.

Near the end, we read some more hints Keith in person:

Stones fans have been spoiled with the expanded Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! and now Exile, but what’s on the cards? "Nobody’s going to make a decision about what we’re going to do until we get further into 2010," says Richards. "No doubt the guys are going to want to talk about whether we’re going to record and go on the road in one form or another. Maybe we’re going to talk about doing it differently. There’s going to be a lot of that. I would tell you if I knew."

==> Recommended: The Stones’ Secret documentary

…this is about Cocksucker Blues and it’s from the Times Online herself, woah:

There are secrets, and then there are secrets. With all the carefully recalibrated stories about drug excesses and sexual high jinks during the recording of the Rolling Stones’ 1972 album Exile on Main St, it’s hard to believe there could be anything that Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the rest of their band of groovy, deeply grooved superstars could possibly have to hide or be ashamed of. So it’s astonishing to discover that, for nearly four decades, the Stones have vigorously enforced a strict legal injunction banning the screening of a documentary about them, a film some of the few people who have seen it think is a masterpiece.

==> Keith gets restless …

The Toronto Sun reports:

Keith is fed up with Mick Jagger stalling the next Rolling Stones album – he wants the band to record new songs as soon as possible.

[…] The guitarist is itching to get back into the studio and is desperately trying to find out when Jagger is likely to want to reunite.

He says, "I’m trying to find out when it will happen myself. I sent a note to (drummer) Charlie Watts saying, ‘Should I put an ad in a music magazine – guitar player for hire?’ I’ve got to do something.

"It doesn’t matter which band, you have got to have the frontman wanting to do it. You can’t shove the lead singer into it. I learned that many years ago. I usually wait for Mick to call me. When he does, it’s because he’s got an itch and wants to go to work."

==> Jagger confirms next tour!!!

Mick feeds our hopes for another Stones tour, most probably that will happen in 2011. He said:

“I’m sure we will. It would be stupid to say there won’t be another Stones tour because I love doing them and I always imagine there would be another Stones tour. When that’s going to be I don’t really know at this point.”

Sam CutlerRemember SAM CUTLER!? You should, because Sam Cutler leaves no Stones unturned!

1) This is another recommended read at the Globe and Mail.

1969 – It was Cutler who, show after show that fall, introduced Mick, Keith & Co. as “the greatest rock-’n’-roll band in the world” – a handle Cutler had coined earlier at a concert in London’s Hyde Park. It was Cutler, too, who was the nominal MC of the group’s free final show, a hastily organized outdoor gig at the desolate Altamont Speedway east of San Francisco.

As one of the rings on his right hand’s fingers show, he’s also a members in the fabled Dead “family.”

So, people, this man has a story to tell, I’m sure. It’s called "You Can’t Always Get What You Want: My Life with the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead and Other Wonderful Reprobates" and it’s of cause up on amazon, if you like …

2) Out Of Exile – a three page review from billboard.com about the album, the times and the scope of this re-issue. Particularly interesting are details such as those told by Mike Davis, GM/executive VP of UMG’s catalog division Universal Music Enterprises:

Universal is treating the album like a new release rather than a catalog reissue, with what Davis calls a "front-line release strategy that crosses radio, TV, online, mobile, retail and merch."

Key to the initiative will be a weeklong Stones celebration on NBC’s "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" beginning May 10 that will feature a number of high-profile acts performing songs from "Exile," including Keith Urban (May 11), Sheryl Crow (May 12) and Phish (May 13). The week culminates with NBC’s May 14 U.S. premiere of Stephen Kijak’s documentary film "Stones in Exile," mixing "Exile"-era footage with current band member interviews. In the United Kingdom, "Stones in Exile" will premiere on BBC 2, although an exact airdate is to be announced.

Universal is also ensuring that the new tracks get as wide an audience as possible. "So Divine (Aladdin Story)" will make its global debut as a synch in the May 2 broadcast of CBS’ "Cold Case" seventh-season finale, while hot on the heels of "Plundered," "Following the River" will be serviced to U.S. and international radio up to two weeks ahead of the album’s bow. Its accompanying video-newly edited from archive footage-will premiere on the band’s relaunched website (rollingstones.com) around the same time.

Orla Lee, London-based GM of Polydor U.K., says the campaign will feature a "two-tiered approach" aimed at attracting a "young, new audience" outside the existing fan base. This includes an increased online presence, with the Stones’ recently launched Facebook page already attracting more than 813,000 fans.

Spike TV has honoured our Keith with the "Scream 2009 Rock Immortal Award" – well chosen, I say!

The announcement was made Thursday by Casey Patterson, Spike TV’s senior vice president of talent development and event production.

The two-hour Scream 2009 awards show is to tape Saturday at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, Calif., and will premiere on Spike TV Oct. 27.

"Keith Richards is part rock god, part superhero and nobody had rocked as hard and lived to tell about it," Patterson said in a statement about the longtime member of the Rolling Stones. "As his friend Johnny Depp once pointed out, Keith Richards was a beloved and feared pirate long before he ever played the part in any movie."

Lost Photos of Young Beatles and Rolling Stones (1964-66) to Open New NYC Gallery

The Not Fade Away Gallery (NYC) presents "THE BRITISH ARE COMING!," a world premiere exhibition of previously unpublished, extraordinary photographs of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones at work and at play…as photographed by Bob Bonis, their first U.S. tour manager.

Forty-five years after the The Beatles and The Rolling Stones first came to America, an extraordinary collection of "lost" photos of the young bands has just been discovered. The 3,500 photographs — extraordinary, intimate and unpublished — were taken by Bob Bonis, their U.S. Tour manager, during their first U.S. tours (1964, 1965 and 1966) and document perhaps the most critical point in their careers: coming to America.
