Off Stones: RIP Dickey!

Dickey Betts + Duane Allman

Sad, sad news – Dickey Betts dies at 80

I, as a Stones fan, was hit by the music of the Allman Brothers Band in the early 70ies. Their times and their music will be forever carved into my heart. Maybe, many of us Stones fans out here have similar feelings about the ABB. Then again, our very Chuck Leavell had played and toured as a member of the ABB with them from 1973 on (after Duane had died at the end of October 1971) and we all know that he is a member of The Rolling Stones as principle keyboardist and music director since 1982.

So here, in honor of Dickey, some short lines from an interview by Chuck about Dickey and a vide of the ABB playing ‘Blue Sky’ in 1992.

Well, I can tell you that, when I first joined the band—and this would have been, when we were touring in 1973—we played Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Dickey had been married to a Native American woman named Sandy Blue Sky, who he wrote the song “Blue Sky“ for. And Dickey called me up and he said, “Chuck, we got a couple of days off. Would you and Rose Lane (my wife Rose Lane), like to go to a reservation and meet some of these Native Americans, meet some of the chiefs, and attend some ceremonies? And that was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had. It was so sweet of him to reach out to myself and to Rose Lane and to include us in that little trip that we made. And it’s something that I will never, ever forget and be grateful for.

And here are all the brothers, still alive, with a kickin’ One Way Out – “This is the first time the ABB played this song, in March 3rd, 1971 (first show). The Eat A Peach version is from 06/27/71.

Rumours – Lady GaGa??

Rumours – Lady GaGa??

The press seems to take note on what fans speculate across the net.

With headlines like “Exclusive: Rolling Stones US tour set to feature iconic popstar after setlist leak” (mirror.co.uk) and “The Rolling Stones’ US tour ‘set to feature iconic popstar after setlist leak’” (dailymail.co.uk) the tabloids link the rehearsals of SSOH with the guess that Lady Gaga will join the Stones on their tour.

Well, “Calm down!” is my first guess on this. Lady Gaga might join in on the opening night – maybe – but the wole tour? Nonsense, I’ld say. Not that I (or we all) would not apprechiate this – but I think, that this ain’t gonna happen… what do you think?

Woah – only 9 days more and counting down…
